Super Star Wars

The SNES trilogy's opener, and the one people remember for being punishingly hard. Gorgeous sprite work, a Mode 7 landspeeder stage, and a soundtrack that pushed the SNES sound chip. Bring patience or bring save states.

Playing it today

Great to look at and still brutally hard. Super Star Wars retells A New Hope as a side-scrolling run-and-gun with a Mode 7 landspeeder stage and a soundtrack that pushed the SNES sound chip. It was a critical hit in 1992, and the difficulty is the part that has aged worst: three lives per continue and five continues, then the Darth Vader game-over screen and back to the start.

The realistic modern option is the 2015 PS4 port, $9.99 on the PlayStation Store. Code Mystics added saving at any point, online leaderboards, trophies and screen filters, and save-anywhere is what makes it finishable for most people. It was also cross-buy with the Vita version at launch. Otherwise it is the original cartridge on a Super Nintendo.

Skip it if you want Star Wars story or tolerate difficulty poorly. Play it if you grew up on 16-bit platformers, and know that Super Empire Strikes Back is usually the fan pick of the three.

Where to play it

On modern consoles only · checked September 24, 2026

The PS4 version on the PlayStation Store is the only one sold today, and it adds the save options the 1992 cartridge never had.

Code Mystics' 2015 port for PS4 (and PS Vita at launch) is still listed on the US PlayStation Store at $9.99. The 2009 Wii Virtual Console release disappeared with the Wii Shop Channel. There has never been a PC version or a Switch release.
