Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance

The last and friendliest of the X-Wing sims: a story about a Corellian trading family, a flyable Millennium Falcon, and the Battle of Endor as the finale. If TIE Fighter feels too austere to start with, start here instead. Ten dollars on Steam and GOG.

Playing it today

The easiest of the X-Wing sims to start with in 2026, and the best supported. Fifty story missions follow a Corellian trading family into the Rebellion and end with you flying the Millennium Falcon at Endor.

Out of the box it will not start without a joystick or gamepad, runs at 4:3, and is capped at a low frame rate. The fan-run X-Wing Alliance Upgrade project fixes all of that: its Mega Patch adds widescreen and 4K support, rebuilt ship models, and a joystick emulation option in its configurator. That same install is the base for the TIE Fighter Total Conversion, so a $9.99 copy of Alliance is the platform for the whole modding scene. Valve rates it Playable on Steam Deck, with a launcher warning.

A real flight stick still matters here. If you want arcade flying you can do with a pad, Rogue Squadron is the better fit.
