Star Wars: Rebellion

A galaxy-scale 4X about running the Rebellion or the Empire: recruiting characters, moving fleets, and winning planets one loyalty point at a time. Reviews at the time were poor, the interface is genuinely hostile, and a stubborn group of strategy players still swear by it. Sold as Supremacy in Europe. It has left digital storefronts, so buying it legally is now difficult.

Playing it today

The deepest Star Wars strategy game on paper, and one of the hardest to get today. Rebellion is a real-time 4X across the whole galaxy: recruit film characters, send them on diplomacy and sabotage missions, win planets one loyalty point at a time, and build fleets for either side. Critics disliked it in 1998, and the interface is still a hurdle, but its players rate it highly (90 percent positive on Steam).

Disney pulled it from Steam and GOG in April 2026. If you already own it, it still downloads from your library, and GOG owners get an offline installer GOG updated for current Windows in 2025. Keep a copy of it.

Without a digital copy, a secondhand disc is the remaining legal route, and Windows 10 and 11 block the old SafeDisc copy protection on it. For most people the better answer is Awakening of the Rebellion, a free mod for Empire at War (which you do need to own) built as an homage to it.

Nobody sells it now. If you bought it on Steam or GOG before April 2026, it is still in your library; otherwise the legal options are a secondhand disc or the Empire at War mod Awakening of the Rebellion.

There has never been a console version. It was a Windows game only, sold in the UK as Star Wars: Supremacy.
