Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Factor 5's arcade flight game, and the reason a lot of people bought the N64 Expansion Pak. Trench runs, speeder chases, and a medal system designed to make you replay every mission chasing gold. The PC version is ten dollars on Steam and GOG. The N64 version, which is the one people actually mean, has never been re-released.

Still fun, but the version people remember is the one you cannot buy. The Nintendo 64 original has never been re-released; on a working N64, the Expansion Pak lifts it from 320x240 to 640x480 and is worth having.

What is on sale is Rogue Squadron 3D, the 1998 PC port, $9.99 on GOG and Steam. It reviewed a little lower than the N64 game, mostly for handling and looks, and it takes some work now. Widescreen only comes from a community wrapper, and even then the menus and hangar stay at 640x480. Wingman, a community mod, fixes the camera falling behind your ship and the physics glitches that show up at high frame rates. If the GOG copy crashes on launch, reinstalling to a short folder path is the known fix. Valve rates it Unsupported on Steam Deck.

Play it with a gamepad, not a flight stick; this is an arcade shooter. If you own a GameCube or an early Wii, its sequel Rogue Leader is the better game.

GOG, for the offline installer. The Steam copy is the same game, and Valve rates it Unsupported on Steam Deck.

The Nintendo 64 original has never been re-released on any console or service. Original N64 hardware and a cartridge are the only way to play that version.
