Yes, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is crossplay: players on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S race in the same online lobbies. It is switched on by default, you can turn it off, and on PC it covers both the Steam and Epic Games Store versions. What does not cross over is your progress, and the game is not on Game Pass or any Nintendo console.
The official FAQ on the game's Steam forum, last edited by Secret Mode on launch morning, says crossplay "is enabled by default, but it can be turned off."
What crossplay covers
- Online races for up to 12. Quick Race and the Multiplayer Tour take 12 speeders; the podracer modes take 8. Matchmaking fills empty seats with AI.
- Parties of three. You can group with two friends on any platform and queue together. Fuse Games has said six-player parties are coming "within the first few weeks of launch." As of this morning there is still no date, and the second hotfix, posted to Steam at 10:04am Central today, lists only "general stability fixes."
- No private lobbies. A party always matchmakes with strangers and AI.
There is also no in-game voice chat that we can find. Players have been asking for it on the Steam forums since October 7, with no reply from the developers. A mixed group will need Discord or a phone call, since PlayStation and Xbox party chat do not talk to each other.
Can you turn crossplay off?
Yes. The toggle is in the game's settings, per the official FAQ and launch-week guides, and players on Steam report racing with it off. Leaving it on means bigger lobbies and faster matches, so only switch it off if you have a reason, such as avoiding PC players or keeping a child's games console-only.
On Xbox, the console's own privacy setting for cross-network play also has to allow it. Child accounts often have that blocked, so check there first if crossplay seems not to work.
On PC, the game runs its online features through Epic's online services (the official known-issues list names the Epic overlay). There is a Link Epic Account option under Settings, then Extras. Fuse has not said whether linking is required for crossplay, and two players asking on the Steam forums last week got no answer. One Steam player wrote overnight that switching that option off and on again cleared a matchmaking error and let them race with two PS5 friends. It is one player's fix, but it costs nothing to try.
Does progress carry across platforms?
No cross-progression has been announced. The FAQ, the store pages and the official support center say nothing about it, and the support center identifies players by their Xbox, PSN or Steam ID, which suggests each platform keeps its own profile. Plan on your unlocks staying on the platform where you bought the game, and on buying it again if you switch.
Within PC, Steam Cloud is listed, so your saves follow you between computers on the same Steam account. A Steam copy and an Epic copy are separate purchases.
What you need to play online on each platform
| Platform | Stores | Online subscription | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC | Steam, Epic Games Store | None | Windows only; Denuvo, 5 machine activations on Steam |
| Steam Deck | Steam | None | Verified by Valve; the Epic overlay can make the game look frozen, press B |
| PS5 | PlayStation Store, disc | PS Plus | Up to 12 online players per the store listing |
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Store, disc | Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate | Cross-network play must be allowed in Xbox settings |
| PS4, Xbox One | None | None | No version exists |
The campaign, Arcade events and Scenarios all work offline on every platform, so a console player without a subscription can still play everything except online multiplayer. Prices and editions are in our preorder guide; Standard is $59.99 everywhere.
Is Galactic Racer on Game Pass?
No. It is not in the Game Pass catalog on console or PC, and neither Microsoft nor Secret Mode has announced it for a future wave. Xbox's first October Game Pass batch had no Star Wars game in it. EA Play does not help either: Secret Mode publishes this one, not EA. If you want Star Wars through a subscription, here is what Game Pass actually has.
Is it coming to Switch 2?
Nothing has been announced. There is no Switch or Switch 2 version, and Fuse Games has neither confirmed nor ruled out a port.
The one thing that keeps the question alive is a rumor: in July, the Spanish site Nintenderos reported a Switch 2 listing for the game at the retailer Geekay. No one at Fuse, Secret Mode or Nintendo has backed that up, and retailer listings are often placeholders. Treat it as unconfirmed until Nintendo puts it in a Direct or on the eShop. There is no local multiplayer on any version, either; our split screen explainer covers what two people in one room can do.
If your friends are on another platform
Buy it on whatever you already play on. Crossplay means a PS5 player, an Xbox player and a Steam Deck player can share a party today, and nothing carries between platforms anyway, so there is no reason to follow your friends to their console. Budget for PS Plus or Game Pass Essential if you are on console, settle on Discord for voice, and keep the group to three until the six-player update lands. If one of you is on Switch, there is no way in yet.
Earlier: launch-day report, the first hotfix, the first two days on Steam. Everything else is on the Galactic Racer hub.
How we checked
- Crossplay, party size, player counts and offline modes from the official FAQ on the game's Steam forum (last edited October 6) and the Steam store page.
- The second hotfix from the official Steam announcement, posted 10:04am Central on October 12.
- Subscription requirements from the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings, which match what our September 26 preorder guide recorded; stores from the official site; player IDs from the official support center (edited October 5).
- Game Pass status from the Game Pass catalog and Xbox's first October wave (announced October 7).
- Voice chat, the Epic account option and the crossplay toggle in practice from Steam forum threads between October 7 and the morning of October 12. These are player reports, labeled as such above.
- Switch 2: no announcement from Fuse, Secret Mode or Nintendo as of October 12. The retailer listing is Nintenderos' July report, unconfirmed.
