Star Wars: Battlefront
The one that started it: large-scale ground battles across the films with AI filling both sides, so a match never felt empty. Modest next to what came after, and it landed at exactly the right moment. It is still sold on its own on Steam and GOG, and inside Aspyr's Battlefront Classic Collection, which launched badly enough that its Steam rating has never recovered.

Playing it today
The 2004 Battlefront still works as a big sandbox full of bots, and on PC the $9.99 standalone on GOG or Steam is the version to buy. If you only get one Pandemic Battlefront, get Battlefront II (2005): more maps, space battles and playable heroes. Come back to this one for the maps as they first played.
Both digital versions were patched in 2020 with native widescreen, controller support and online play that replaced the dead GameSpy service, and Steam and GOG owners share servers. On GOG, online needs the Galaxy client. GOG also added the game to its Preservation Program in 2025, which brought cloud saves and a Windows 10 and 11 stability pass. Steam's own count averages a few dozen players at a time, so treat online as a bonus.
Skip Aspyr's Classic Collection on PC. It bundles both games for about $35 and sits at 24 percent positive on Steam. Buy it only on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, or if couch split-screen matters to you.

Buy the $9.99 standalone on GOG or Steam. They play online together, and the Classic Collection costs more than three times as much for a version Steam players rate poorly.
On PS4, PS5, Xbox and Switch, Aspyr's Battlefront Classic Collection is the only version sold, and it adds split-screen. The original Xbox disc also plays on Xbox One and Series consoles through backward compatibility.
