Mara Jade Skywalker went live on the holotable on July 28, 2026, and she arrived carrying more reader attachment than any unit Capital Games has added in years. She is Palpatine's personal assassin, Luke Skywalker's wife, and the single strongest argument fans have ever made for Legends. This is the first entry in Holotable Files, our series on where SWGOH's characters actually come from.

Where she comes from
Mara Jade was born in 1991, in the first chapter of the book that restarted Star Wars. Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire needed someone who could stand opposite Luke without being a Jedi or an Imperial officer, and he wrote a smuggler with a grudge and a secret: she had been the Emperor's Hand, Palpatine's covert assassin, dispatched by his dying command to kill Luke Skywalker. She spent the Thrawn trilogy trying to do exactly that, and spent the fifteen years of novels after it becoming a Jedi Master instead, trained first by Kyle Katarn and then by the man she was sent to murder.
Then Legends did the thing that made her permanent. Luke and Mara married in the 1999 comic Star Wars: Union, had a son named Ben, and became the married center of the Expanded Universe for a decade. Which is also why her ending hurts: in Karen Traviss's Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice (2007), Jacen Solo kills her, and her death is the literal sacrifice that completes his turn into Darth Caedus. Ben found his mother's body with Jacen standing over it. Luke spent a book blaming the wrong person. Her last Legends appearance was Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse in 2012, and then the whole continuity was reclassified.
She has not been back since, and not for lack of asking. Zahn has said repeatedly that he would write her again. Lucasfilm has been the holdout, and the stated reason is the marriage: a Luke Skywalker with a wife and a son is not the Luke the sequel trilogy built. That is why a mobile game putting her on a roster in 2026 lands the way it does. This is the closest thing to official recognition Mara Jade has had in fourteen years, and it took a non-canon era called Myths & Legends to make room for her.
The kit, decoded
The ability names are read straight off her shelf (kit text via the reveal):
- Two Halves (basic): damage plus Protection Up, dealing 50% more if she has Riposte, with Jedi Knight Luke assisting under his lead. The pairing is the point, mechanically and otherwise.
- I Always Play Fair (special): mass Defense Down, upgraded to Stagger on enemies that already had it, with Offense Up for the team and Riposte for her. The title is Mara being funny, which is the register Zahn always wrote her in.
- The Last Command (special): damage that scales with every out-of-turn attack from non-Old Republic Jedi allies, plus an unavoidable extra hit and a bonus turn under Luke. The Last Command is the 1993 close of Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, the book where Mara finally stops being the Emperor's weapon. The ability being about what everyone else does is a neat piece of design.
- A Galactic Union (unique): +30% critical chance, shields on assist, and under Jedi Knight Luke she shares Jedi's Will and Instant Defeat Immunity with him. Named for Union, the comic where the two of them get married. She keeps Luke alive. Of course she does.
Read them in order and the kit tells her arc: a weapon, a joke, a command she finally stops taking, and a marriage.
Who she's for
If you run Jedi Knight Luke, this is a straight upgrade to a squad you already own, and the Instant Defeat Immunity share is the kind of effect that changes how a team dies rather than how fast it kills. If you don't, she is a well-built Jedi Attacker whose best lines are switched off, which is the same trade Starkiller asks you to make.
Our standing marquee advice hasn't changed: unless you need her for a competitive season that is happening right now, the farm comes around and the crystals don't. Nothing in this kit expires.
What is worth doing either way is reading the source. Heir to the Empire is still the best-paced Star Wars novel there is, it is 35 years old, and it explains in about forty pages why a mobile game adding a character in 2026 made this many people emotional.
