The Ronin went live in Galaxy of Heroes at 1pm Central on October 6, 2026, a Dark Side Sith attacker who brings his astromech, R5-D56, into battle as a summon. He comes from "The Duel," the short that opened Star Wars: Visions in 2021: a former Dark Lord of the Sith walking a black-and-white galaxy built out of samurai cinema. This is a Holotable Files entry, after Jaxxon, his partner in Episode 3 of the Era of Myths & Legends.

The vitals

  • Released: October 6, 2026, 1pm CT. Capital Games posted no release announcement; the date comes from the game data on swgoh.gg ("First Seen Oct 6"). The kit itself was revealed on July 21.
  • Alignment / role: Dark Side · Attacker · Sith. R5-D56 is a summoned Sith Droid attacker.
  • How you get him: packs, plus The Wanderer's Blade marquee, October 6 to 13 (1pm CT both ends), whose tiers ask you to raise him from three stars to seven, so it pays out alongside the packs rather than replacing them (event). The single pack is 1,299 crystals for 5 to 330 shards, and by its published odds lands 5 or 7 shards 87% of the time (pack). The 5,999 and 12,990 crystal packs and the $74.99 (100 shards) and $99.99 (130 shards) bundles leave October 13; the 1,299 pack and the $29.99 bundle (30 shards) stay to October 20. Episode Pass+ holders get 20 free shards. Seven stars is 330. swgoh.gg projects him farmable in December 2026 to January 2027; that is its estimate, not Capital Games'.
  • Built to work with: Darth Jar Jar in the lead and a Sith Healer such as Yoda (Dark Side Vision) beside him.
  • Required for: Darth Jar Jar's Journey Guide, Tiers II, III and IV, at seven stars.

Where he comes from

"The Duel" premiered on Disney+ on September 22, 2021, as the first episode of Star Wars: Visions, an anthology from Japanese anime studios, made by Kamikaze Douga and directed by Takanobu Mizuno (StarWars.com; Wookieepedia). StarWars.com billed it as Jedi and Sith "with an alternate history pulled from Japanese lore" (StarWars.com): Jedi clans serving feuding lords, and a Sith rebellion that failed.

The short is grainy black and white, with color saved for red lightsabers and kyber crystals. A wanderer and his droid stop at a teahouse just as bandits led by a Sith named Kouru raid the village. When the droid is hit, the Ronin asks the shopkeeper to have him "fully operational by the time this pot boils," and the kettle becomes the film's countdown. He wins the duel with a trick, a hidden blade from behind, and afterward the villagers see what Kouru already knew: his saber is red. He destroys her weapon, shows a robe full of Sith kyber crystals, and gives hers to the village's child chief to ward off evil (Wookieepedia). Character designer Takashi Okazaki built him on Toshiro Mifune's drifter in Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (Wookieepedia).

The droid's name is messier. The short never says it. StarWars.com's first write-up called him B5-56, then corrected it to R5-D56, the name Galaxy of Heroes uses (StarWars.com). The Art of Star Wars: Visions says "D56" points to Daigorō, the little boy who travels with the swordsman in Lone Wolf and Cub (Wookieepedia).

Lucasfilm's James Waugh said "The Duel felt most rife for an ongoing story," and Ronin: A Visions Novel by Emma Mieko Candon came out from Del Rey on October 12, 2021 (StarWars.com; Wookieepedia). In it, he had been the Dark Lord who led the Sith rebellion, then turned on his own followers; now he hunts the ones who remain (Wookieepedia). Candon's summary of the droid is the best one: R5 is "doing his best to keep his human alive" (Wookieepedia). On October 29, 2025, Visions Volume 3 opened with a sequel, "The Duel: Payback," again directed by Mizuno, from Kamikaze Douga and ANIMA, with the Ronin hunted by a Jedi called the Grand Master (StarWars.com; episode guide).

None of it is canon. Asked at Anime NYC 2025, Waugh, an executive producer on Visions, said, "It is definitely not canon" (AniTrendz), and Wookieepedia marks all of it non-canon. That is exactly the brief of the Era of Myths & Legends, which also gave us a Marvel rabbit and a Sith Jar Jar.

The kit, decoded

Ability text is quoted from the official reveal. Someone asked Capital Games whether the three ability names were meant to form a haiku. They count out 5, 7, 5. The reply was ":D".

  • Wandering Steel Hums (basic): damage plus Offense Up, and each use makes his special hit 20% harder (max 100%). Against a Shocked target with a Gungan Sith leading, it is "guaranteed to critically hit if able," and R5-D56 supplies the Shock. The design notes call that loop "your bread and butter under Darth Jar Jar."
  • Oaths Buried Beneath Silence (special, 3-turn cooldown): against a target with Resilient Defense or Taunt it "deals 300% more damage and inflicts Armor Shred until the end of the encounter," and each use leaves two stacks of Bleed that can't be dispelled or resisted. It also steals the target's Critical Damage for both him and the droid. Each use raises the basic's damage by 100%, up to 300%.
  • Mercy Left Behind (unique, zeta and omicron): the Boiling Point countdown. He starts with 10 stacks and loses one a turn, five more with a Gungan Sith leader and five more with a Sith Healer. At zero, R5-D56 arrives. Alone, that is ten of his turns; with Darth Jar Jar and a Sith Healer, the droid is out on turn one. The design notes: "the Darth Jar Jar build is clearly where the kit wants to live." Capital Games never explains the name, but we read it as the teapot: in the short, the droid comes rolling down the hill when the pot boils. The Territory Wars omicron adds Speed, Alert and Speed Up against the enemy leader, and a Max Health penalty for Bleeding enemies who try to Taunt or Stealth.
  • R5-D56, summoned: Arc Jab Shocks the target and shields the Ronin; Guided Payload hits every enemy, adds a hit for each one with Taunt, Stealth or Resilient Defense, and gives the Ronin a permanent +50 Speed; Follow the Blade gives the droid a bonus turn every time the Ronin takes one. The design note pictures R5 "always one step behind the blade."

One catch between the reveal and the game: the reveal gave R5-D56 25% Max Health and Protection per Sith ally, and the game text reads 20%.

Do you need him?

If you want Darth Jar Jar, yes, at seven stars. The Ronin is the last of the six Myths & Legends units his Journey Guide asks for, required from Tier II on (journey guide).

If you are not chasing Jar Jar, he is a specialist. He shreds teams that lean on Taunt, Stealth and Resilient Defense, and with no Gungan Sith leader or Sith Healer he waits ten turns for his droid. swtorstrategies' July read of the reveal matches ours: he "looks like a character built for a specific Sith structure, not a universal plug-and-play attacker," and casual players should "wait for testing" (swtorstrategies). Nobody has proven that squad in Grand Arena yet.

Spend only if both are true: you want Darth Jar Jar soon, and his other five units are already at seven stars. Even then, do the math: the three cash bundles together are 260 shards for $204.97, and the crystal pack averages under eight shards a pull. Everyone else should wait for the farm node and spend the time gearing a Sith Healer.

And watch "The Duel." It runs about thirteen minutes, and it is still the best argument that Star Wars can look like anything.
