Star Wars: Dark Forces

Kyle Katarn's debut, and the first Star Wars shooter with its own engine, its own level design, and a Death Star plans heist that beats the film to the punch. Nightdive's 2024 remaster is the one to buy: higher resolutions, controller support, and it runs on every current console. The original 1995 release has quietly left digital stores.

Still one of the best Star Wars shooters, and the 2024 remaster is the version to play. Nightdive rebuilt it in its KEX engine with all fourteen original levels, resolutions up to 4K at 120fps, controller support with a weapon wheel, and a toggle back to the classic look. It reviewed at 78 on PC and runs well on a Steam Deck.

The original 1995 release was pulled from Steam and GOG in April 2026. If you already own it, keep it: it runs in DOSBox as sold, and The Force Engine, a community-made source port, plays it with mouselook, widescreen and saves from anywhere, using the game files from your own copy.

Skip it if you need a story told in cutscenes or a map that holds your hand. The levels are mazes of keycards and switches, and that is most of the fun. On a 60Hz screen, the fix for the remaster's camera judder is one console command, cl_engineHZ 120.
