Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

Kyle picks up a lightsaber, the series goes fully 3D, and live-action cutscenes carry a light-side or dark-side path that changes the ending. The saber combat is clumsy by any modern standard. The level design and the multiplayer scene are why people still talk about it. Six dollars on Steam, and GOG bundles the Mysteries of the Sith expansion in with it.

Playing it today

Yes, it holds up, if you can forgive a 1997 lightsaber. The level design is the reason to play: huge, vertical stages that still feel like places. The saber combat is clumsy by modern standards, and the live-action cutscenes are pure 1997, which is part of the charm. It is the highest-rated Star Wars game of the 90s and six dollars on either store.

The GOG and Steam versions are patched to run on current Windows with working music, so it will start. To make it look right on a modern screen, install OpenJKDF2, a community-made source port that works with both store versions. It adds widescreen, controller support, uncapped frame rates and a configurable field of view. The project calls itself beta, but the campaign can be finished start to finish.

Skip it if you want a modern saber game; Jedi Outcast plays better. Play it if you want to see where Kyle Katarn became a Jedi.
