Star Wars: Rebel Assault

LucasArts' CD-ROM showcase: full-motion video backdrops with an on-rails ship stuck in front of them. It sold in enormous numbers and it plays like a tech demo, because that is mostly what it was.

Playing it today

Play it as a history lesson. Rebel Assault sold a million copies and helped sell the CD-ROM drive, but it is a rail shooter with a ship pasted over pre-rendered video, and the controls fight you all the way. Critics were split even in 1993.

The only version sold today is the PC one, packaged with Rebel Assault II for $9.99 on GOG and Steam. Both come set up in DOSBox, so there is nothing to configure. GOG added the bundle to its Preservation Program in April 2025, which means GOG has updated it for modern systems and committed to keeping it working. Expect a small 4:3 picture with no widescreen option.

Skip it if you want a Star Wars flight game to actually play; X-Wing and TIE Fighter cost the same. Buy it if you are curious what a 1993 blockbuster looked like, and play the sequel too, since it is in the box.
