Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith

An expansion large enough to count as its own game, and the one where you play as Mara Jade. Harder and stranger than Dark Forces II, with some of the sharpest level design LucasArts built in that engine.

Playing it today

Worth it for anyone who finished Jedi Knight and wanted more. It is set five years after Dark Forces II, with Kyle Katarn now training Mara Jade, and you play as Mara with four new weapons and five new Force powers. It is harder than the base game and the levels are some of the best built in that engine.

Play it after Dark Forces II, not instead of it. The retail disc needed the base game, but the GOG and Steam versions run standalone, and both are patched for current Windows with working music. For widescreen and controller support, OpenJKDF2, the community source port for Jedi Knight, has a Mysteries of the Sith mode. Its developers label that mode beta, a step behind their Dark Forces II support, so keep the stock game installed as a fallback.

Skip it if the base game's saber combat already wore you out; the expansion does not change how it feels.
