Star Wars: Rebel Assault II

Better than the first, which is a low bar. Live-action video shot on real soundstages, more actual flying, and a story about chasing a stealth TIE prototype. A curiosity now.

Playing it today

The better of the two Rebel Assault games, which is a low bar, and a curiosity today. It added live-action actors, shot against blue screen in costumes and props from the Lucasfilm archive, the first new live-action Star Wars footage since Return of the Jedi, and it gives you a bit more actual flying. It is still an on-rails shooter from 1995, and it plays like one.

You cannot buy it alone. It comes in the Rebel Assault 1 + 2 package, $9.99 on GOG and Steam, set up in DOSBox so it runs on current Windows without any fiddling. GOG also sells it for Mac and Linux. GOG put the bundle in its Preservation Program in April 2025 and has committed to keeping it running. Expect 4:3 video at mid-90s resolution.

Worth an evening if you like Star Wars history or full-motion-video oddities. If you want a flight game to sink hours into, buy X-Wing Alliance instead.
