If you buy one Star Wars game on Steam, make it Knights of the Old Republic, for $9.99. If you want the best deal this week, EA's sale has Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at $10.49, 85 percent off. The ten below are the Star Wars games we would buy on Steam today, ranked on what Steam's players say about them and whether anyone is still playing, with the price each one was on September 16.
This is our all-time ranking narrowed to what Steam actually sells, which moves a few things. TIE Fighter, second on that list, is not on this one, because the best version of it is not the one Steam sells. More on that below.

1. Knights of the Old Republic
The best Star Wars game you can buy anywhere, and ten dollars. Its twist still lands, its writing still holds up, and a few hundred people are playing it on any given evening, twenty-three years on. Nothing about the remake suggests it is close, so there is no reason to wait for it; our KOTOR guide has the two mods to install first.
2. Empire at War: Gold Pack
The best-reviewed Star Wars game on Steam, at 98 percent, and after Zero Company and The Old Republic the most played one. It was a 79 on Metacritic in 2006. Two decades of total conversions are the reason it is still here, and on Monday evening it had more players than Jedi: Survivor and Outlaws put together. Start with our mod guide.
3. Zero Company
The newest game here and the most played, and our own 9 out of 10. Clone Wars squad tactics from people who built modern XCOM. It is the only game in the ten at a new-release price, and it earns that; if you want to wait, it is the one with a live player count we are watching week by week.
4. Knights of the Old Republic II
Darker and stranger than the first game, shipped unfinished, and better reviewed on Steam than its predecessor. Install the fan-made Restored Content Mod before you start. It is the clearest case in Star Wars of a community finishing a game.
5. Battlefront II (Classic, 2005)
The Battlefront people mean, with the space battles you can fly into and board. Buy this standalone version, which Steam still sells for $9.99, and not Aspyr's Battlefront Classic Collection: the collection sits at 24 percent positive on Steam against 95 for the original. The 2004 Battlefront is also still sold alone, at 97 percent, if you want both.
6. Jedi: Survivor
The best modern lightsaber combat, and at $10.49 this week the easiest recommendation in the list. Its 71 percent is the launch talking: the PC version shipped in rough shape and took months of patches to fix. Our Survivor guide has where it stands now, and the short version is that it is fine.
7. Republic Commando
A squad shooter from 2005 with a 96 percent rating and forty players, which is the gap between how good it is and how few people know. It runs perfectly on a Steam Deck, and it is ten dollars.
8. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
The lightsaber game people were still playing online twenty years later, with a character creator and a saber system nobody has bettered for multiplayer duels. Its predecessor, Jedi Outcast, is also $9.99 and the better single-player story, but Academy is the one to start with.
9. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Third on our all-time list and ninth here only because fewer Steam players have reviewed it. It worked out what a lightsaber should feel like in first person in 1997, and it is six dollars.
10. LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
The best game here to play with a kid, at 97 percent. All six prequel and original films in one package. The newer Skywalker Saga covers nine films and looks far better, and at $49.99 it is the pricier way to do the same job; our LEGO ranking has which to pick.

EA's discounts on Steam, as of September 16: Jedi: Survivor $10.49 (was $69.99), Jedi: Fallen Order $7.99 (was $39.99), Battlefront II (2017) $9.99 (was $39.99), Battlefront (2015) $4.99 (was $19.99) and Squadrons $3.99 (was $39.99). Steam did not show us an end date, so treat them as this week only.
Worth it at the right price
- Star Wars: The Old Republic is free to start, 90 percent positive, and the most played Star Wars game on Steam after Zero Company. It is an MMO, so it asks for more time than anything above.
- Battlefront II (2017) at $9.99 is the busiest Star Wars shooter on Steam, with 1,308 players in our Wednesday reading.
- Jedi: Fallen Order at $7.99 is the start of Cal Kestis' story and an 88 percent game.
- Squadrons at $3.99 is a good starfighter game with a small player base; play it for the campaign.
Skip on Steam
- Battlefront Classic Collection. 24 percent positive. Buy the 2004 and 2005 games separately instead.
- Star Wars Outlaws at $69.99. 72 percent, and it drops to $17.49 in sales. Our Outlaws guide explains when to buy.
- The Force Unleashed II (63 percent) and Starfighter (55 percent). Both are cheap, and both are cheap for a reason.
Where GOG beats Steam
TIE Fighter is the one to buy elsewhere. Steam's TIE Fighter Special Edition leaves out the 1995 Collector's CD-ROM version, the best-sounding build of the game, and GOG includes it for the same $9.99.
