"Star Wars games in order" means two different things, so this page gives you both. The first list is the order the stories happen, from Knights of the Old Republic almost four thousand years before the films to Tales from the Galaxy's Edge after The Last Jedi. The second is the order the games came out, from X-Wing in 1993 to Galactic Racer on October 6. If you only want the canon games in story order, that is five titles: Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor, Outlaws, Squadrons and Battlefront II (2017), and the section near the end lays out that route and two others.

One rule sorts canon from Legends and it covers every game here. On April 25, 2014, Lucasfilm declared that only the films and The Clone Wars counted as canon going forward, and everything else published before that date became Legends. So every Star Wars game released before April 2014 is Legends, KOTOR and TIE Fighter and The Force Unleashed included, and every game built since then is canon. The status follows the story, not the disc: a 2024 re-release of a 2005 game is still Legends, which is why the Battlefront Classic Collection and the KOTOR remake sit on the Legends side of the table below.

Dates use the films' calendar, BBY and ABY: years before and after the Battle of Yavin, the one at the end of A New Hope. The Phantom Menace is 32 BBY, Revenge of the Sith is 19 BBY, Empire is 3 ABY, Return of the Jedi is 4 ABY, and The Force Awakens is 34 ABY.

In the order the stories happen

Six eras, then one table.

The Old Republic. Four thousand years before the films, when the Jedi and Sith fought open wars. The three BioWare-lineage RPGs live here, and nothing else does. All Legends, and none of it has been contradicted by anything canon, which is why fans still argue about whether it counts.

The High Republic. A couple of centuries before The Phantom Menace, the era of the books. One game, Quantic Dream's Eclipse, is set here, and it has no release date and no year.

The prequels and the Clone Wars. 32 BBY to 19 BBY, from the podrace on Tatooine to Order 66. The Aspyr remasters cluster here, and Zero Company is the first canon game set during the war itself.

The Empire. The nineteen years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Both Jedi games are here, along with The Force Unleashed and the run-up to Yavin.

The rebellion. 0 to 5 ABY, the original trilogy and its immediate aftermath. This is the crowded stretch: the flight sims, Dark Forces, Rogue Squadron, Outlaws, Squadrons and the 2017 Battlefront II campaign.

The New Republic and the sequels. From Jedi Knight's Kyle Katarn at 5 ABY through the Jedi Academy at 14 ABY, then a long gap until Galaxy's Edge at 34 ABY.

Two games are deliberately off this list: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga covers all nine films, and Galaxy of Heroes has no timeline at all. Both get their own paragraph at the end.

A few placements are softer than the table makes them look. Eclipse and Galactic Racer have no year from anyone, Lucasfilm included; "High Republic era" and "somewhere between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens" is as precise as it gets. Zero Company's own material says the twilight of the Clone Wars, and the canon timeline puts it at 19 BBY, though one reference stretches it into 18 BBY. And the reference wikis disagree with themselves on the edges of a few Legends games, among them The Old Republic's end year, Republic Commando, The Force Unleashed, Empire at War, the two N64 and GameCube Rogue Squadron games and TIE Fighter. Where two figures exist we used the narrower one, and none of the disagreements moves a game past its neighbours.

If the Old Republic era is where you want to start, our is KOTOR worth playing in 2026 guide makes the case, and the KOTOR II restored content mod is required reading before you touch the sequel. For the rebellion-era flight sims, we have step-by-step setup guides for X-Wing and TIE Fighter on a modern PC.

The two lists barely overlap. The oldest game by release, X-Wing, sits in the middle of the timeline, and the timeline itself starts with a 2003 RPG. Release order is a history of how Star Wars games were made; timeline order is a history of the galaxy.

Most of the pre-2010 games are still easy to buy, and a few are not; our where to buy old Star Wars games guide covers which store has what. If you play on a console, check every Star Wars game on PS5 before you plan a route, because KOTOR, Empire at War and both flight sims never made it to PlayStation.

Three ways to play them in order

Nobody is going to play thirty-five games in sequence. These three routes are the ones that reward the order.

The canon route, five games. Jedi: Fallen Order (14 BBY), then Jedi: Survivor (9 BBY), then Outlaws (3 ABY), then Squadrons (4 ABY), then the Battlefront II (2017) campaign (4 to 5 ABY, with Resurrection jumping to 34 ABY). Every one of these is current, on modern platforms, and they hand off cleanly: Cal's story runs straight from Fallen Order into Survivor, Outlaws sits between Empire and Jedi, and the two EA games cover the Empire's collapse after Endor. Add Zero Company at the front for the Clone Wars and Vader Immortal between Survivor and Outlaws if you have a headset. Our Fallen Order guide explains why to start there rather than with the better sequel.

The Jedi story, across both continuities. Begin with Fallen Order and Survivor for the purge years, then switch to Legends for what a Jedi does after the Empire falls: Dark Forces (0 BBY, no lightsaber yet), Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (5 ABY), Jedi Outcast (12 ABY) and Jedi Academy (14 ABY). Kyle Katarn's arc from mercenary to Jedi Master is the longest single character story in Star Wars games, and it plays in order without a gap. We ranked the four Jedi Knight games in Jedi Knight games ranked if you want to know which entry to brace for.

The Old Republic, three games. Knights of the Old Republic (3956 BBY), KOTOR II (3951 BBY), then The Old Republic (3643 BBY onward). Three hundred years separate the second and third, and the MMO's class stories assume you know Revan, so this is the one route where order actually changes what a story means. Install the restored content mod before KOTOR II, and treat the MMO's free tier as its own eight-story campaign rather than a subscription commitment; our SWTOR player count piece has the state of it in 2026.

The ones that will not sit still

Battlefront II (2017) is in the table once, at 4 to 5 ABY, but that is only the campaign. Its Resurrection chapters jump to 34 ABY, alongside The Force Awakens, and the multiplayer maps run from Naboo at 32 BBY to Exegol at 35 ABY. It is the one game that touches all three trilogies, and it earns its place in the canon route on the strength of Iden Versio's story alone.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga adapts all nine films, so its "setting" is 32 BBY to 35 ABY and every year in between. The LEGO retellings are tagged canon in the reference wikis in the sense that they adapt canon films, but nobody treats a brick Palpatine as a primary source. Play the episodes in whatever order you like; the game lets you start at any trilogy. Our every LEGO Star Wars game ranked covers where it stands against the older LEGO games.

Galaxy of Heroes has no timeline. It is a roster of characters from every era fighting in a holotable, and the wikis file it as a canon reference rather than a story set anywhere. The same goes for the Battlefront Classic Collection's multiplayer, which ranges across both trilogies; the campaign placements in the table are the closest it gets to a date.

The details

  • Timeline placements come from each game's entry on Wookieepedia, cross-checked against its canon and Legends timeline pages. Where an entry's own infobox and the timeline page disagreed, we used the narrower figure and said so above.
  • The canon and Legends split is from Lucasfilm's April 25, 2014 announcement on StarWars.com: the films and The Clone Wars stayed canon; every earlier book, comic and game became Legends.
  • Release dates are the first release on any platform, from the same entries; Zero Company's from EA's launch announcement and Galactic Racer's from its Steam page.
  • Two games have no in-universe year from any source we could find: Eclipse and Galactic Racer. We have not guessed. If a year is published, we will add it here, visibly.
