There have been about 149 Star Wars games since 1982. Nobody has played them all, and anyone who tells you their personal top ten is definitive is telling you which console they owned as a teenager.
So we built this differently. Three measures, all of which you can check: what critics said at release, what the games sold where a figure was actually published, and who is still playing them right now, which we count off Steam every two hours.
Those three things disagree constantly. Where they do, we say so and explain which one we weighted.
This is the summary of a series
We ranked each era in detail first: the 1990s, the 2000s and the Disney era. This page is the whole franchise in one list.
What the numbers kept telling us
Review scores freeze a moment. Battlefront II scored 68 in 2017 during the loot-box backlash. EA then spent years rebuilding it, and it is now one of the most played Star Wars games in the world. The number never updated. The game did.
Longevity is the measure almost nobody publishes. Empire at War got a 79 and outlives games that scored in the nineties, because twenty years of mods kept it current. A list built only on scores would bury it.
The best-reviewed Star Wars games are mostly old. Of the top five here, three shipped before 2006. That is not nostalgia, it is what the record says.
The ranking
Knights of the Old Republic 2003
BioWare
- Metacritic
- 94
- Playing now
- 394
- Sold
- 2.77M
The only Star Wars game that wins on every measure at once. The highest score the franchise has ever received, 2.77 million copies sold, and still a few hundred people playing on a given evening twenty-three years later. The twist still works and the writing still holds up.
Star Wars: TIE Fighter 1994
Totally Games
- Playing now
- on GOG and Steam
No Metascore, because Metacritic did not exist yet, and the strongest critical record of any game here. PC Gamer named it the best computer game ever released in 1997. IGN still called it the best Star Wars game ever made in 2010. You fly for the Empire, the campaign branches on how well you fly, and the score reacts to the fight around you. Buy the GOG version, which includes the 1995 Collector's CD-ROM. The Steam one does not.
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II 1997
LucasArts
- Metacritic
- 91
- Playing now
- on GOG and Steam
A 91, Computer Gaming World's 1997 Game of the Year, and the game that worked out what a lightsaber should feel like in first person. Everything since, including Outcast below, is built on what this got right. Six dollars today, with Mysteries of the Sith included on GOG.
Star Wars: Zero Company 2026
Bit Reactor / Respawn
- Metacritic
- 86
- Playing now
- 75,825
The best-reviewed Star Wars game since 2004, and our own 9 out of 10. Clone Wars tactics with the best squad customization the licence has produced. Its player number is five days old and still inside the launch spike, so we have ranked it on the reviews and the campaign rather than that figure.
Empire at War 2006
Petroglyph
- Metacritic
- 79
- Playing now
- 2,031
The clearest argument in this entire list for counting players. A 79 in 2006, and today the most played Star Wars game of any era except a brand-new release. Total conversions like Thrawn's Revenge have kept it current for two decades. Our mod guide covers which one to install.
Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) 2005
Pandemic Studios
- Metacritic
- 83
- Playing now
- 239
The one people mean when they say Battlefront. Space battles you can fly into and board, and a campaign told from the clones' side. Twenty years on it is still the thing every new Battlefront gets measured against. Now sold only inside Aspyr's Classic Collection, whose reviews are rough, so buy with that in mind.
KOTOR II: The Sith Lords 2004
Obsidian Entertainment
- Metacritic
- 86
- Playing now
- 506
Darker and stranger than the original, shipped visibly unfinished, and now more played than its predecessor. Install TSLRCM before you start: the fan restoration spent years putting back what Obsidian was not given time to finish. The clearest case in Star Wars gaming of a community completing a game.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor 2023
Respawn Entertainment
- Metacritic
- 85
- Playing now
- 2,080
The high point of the Cal Kestis trilogy so far, and the best pure lightsaber combat in a modern Star Wars game. It launched in rough technical shape on PC and was fixed over months, which is worth remembering whenever a new release stumbles.
Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader 2001
Factor 5
- Metacritic
- 90
- Playing now
- GameCube only
The second-highest score in franchise history and the hardest to act on. A GameCube launch exclusive, never re-released, so unless you own the hardware this is a game you can read about and not play. Factor 5's flight model is the best case anyone has for a remaster that has never come.
The Old Republic 2011
BioWare
- Metacritic
- 85
- Playing now
- 6,414
Fifteen years old and the second most played game on this list. Eight fully-voiced class campaigns that are free to play and remain the most underrated single-player writing in Star Wars gaming. Our player-count breakdown explains why the real audience is bigger than the number shown.
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast 2002
Raven Software
- Metacritic
- 89
- Playing now
- 9
An 89, and still the saber combat people cite when they complain that modern Star Wars games get it wrong. Almost nobody is playing it on Steam today, which says more about 2002 multiplayer than about the game.
Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) 2017
EA DICE
- Metacritic
- 68
- Playing now
- 1,752
The lowest score on this list and one of its most played games. The 68 is a snapshot of the 2017 loot-box launch. EA removed the microtransactions, rebuilt progression and shipped years of free content afterward, and what exists now is the best-looking large-scale Star Wars shooter ever made.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2019
Respawn Entertainment
- Metacritic
- 79
- Playing now
- 1,151
The game that proved single-player Star Wars still worked after years of shooters. A 79 undersells what rested on it, and seven years later it still outdraws most of this list. Play it before Survivor.
Republic Commando 2005
LucasArts
- Metacritic
- 78
- Playing now
- 21
The most cited underrated Star Wars game, and accurately so. Squad tactics, a grim register, and clone troopers written as people rather than scenery. It underperformed on release and its reputation has climbed every year since.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 1998
Factor 5
- Metacritic
- 85
- Playing now
- not on Steam
The one that made Factor 5's name and set up Rogue Leader. An 85 and over a million copies sold on N64. The PC version is still buyable; the console version is not.
What we left out, and why
Star Wars Galaxies. The servers closed in 2011, so there is no live number, and a launch review describes a game that changed beyond recognition before it died. Ranking it against games you can buy tonight compares different things.
The LEGO games. LEGO Skywalker Saga scored 82 and sold enormously, but its audience is overwhelmingly on console where we cannot count anyone. It would sit in the middle of this list on merit and we could not measure it honestly.
Everything on console only. Our player figures are Steam, which means Rogue Leader, the Battlefront handhelds and most of the 2000s console output are judged on scores and sales alone. We flag that on each entry rather than pretending the columns are equal.
The short version
Best game: Knights of the Old Republic. Nothing else wins on all three measures.
Best game you can start tonight and not be alone in: Empire at War, with mods.
Best game nobody talks about: Republic Commando.
Best reason to keep a GameCube: Rogue Leader.
The details
- Review scores are the aggregate at release, cross-checked against Metacritic's own published top-20 Star Wars list. Games from before 2001 mostly have no Metascore at all, so for those we used the period's awards and contemporary reviews instead.
- Player figures are our own Steam readings, the busiest moment recorded in the week to September 1, 2026. Method in our player-count coverage.
- Sales figures appear only where a tracking firm or the rights holder published one.
- Full era-by-era detail: the 1990s, the 2000s, the Disney era.
- We have not played all 149. That is exactly why this list is built from evidence you can check rather than a memory of what we owned.
